Yota Kobayashi (b. 1980, Nagoya, Japan) is an electroacoustic composer. His main compositional interest is in writing music that explores imaginary soundscape. Besides composing acousmatic pieces, his current work focuses on an endeavour to create electroacoustic “tone poems” in his mixed media pieces — the combination of live instruments and electronics creates abstract narratives, which sympathize with/object to/compliment/clash with one another.
He studied music composition at Simon Fraser University with Barry Truax, Owen Underhil, and Arne Eigenfeldt. He is currently based in Vancouver, Canada, where he teaches electronic music and sound designing courses at Langara College and works actively with film, dance, and theater productions.
His works have been presented at numerous festivals and conferences in North/South America and Europe including Bourges International Festival of Electroacoustic Music, ICMC, Sound and Music Computing Conference, New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, and The Noise of Snow Festival.
Among his award include Musica Nova (1st prizes in 2008 and 2009, Czech Republic), Concorso Internazionale Luigi Russolo (1st prize in 2010, Italy/France), Prix Jeu de Temp/Times Play Awards (2nd prize 2009 and 3rd prize 2006, Canada).
